Painting Tool Tips

Why should I spend a bit more money on a brush or a roller cover?

High-quality brushes and roller covers hold more paint and stain, and deliver a more uniform coating than inexpensive brushes and rollers; this creates a more dense and opaque coating in just one application. Investing in a good brush will produce better-looking results.

Exterior Paint Tips

When should I use a primer on the outside of my house?

All new, unpainted surfaces of wood, metal and masonry will need a coat of either a general primer or a rust-inhibitive primer. You’ll need to prime previously painted surfaces where the bare wood or metal is exposed (after you have removed deteriorating paint or loose rust) or if the surface is very chalky.

How many coats of house paint will I need?

Two coats of house paint are recommended when coating new, primed surfaces. A two-coat application will provide additional protection in extreme climates.

When is the best time to exterior paint?

Temperatures of 60-70 degrees or higher are recommended, with 50 degrees being the lowest. If possible avoid direct sunlight. There are exterior products that allow you to paint with temps as low as 30 degrees.

How often should I repaint my house?

Your house should be painted every five to eight years.

What is the drying time for exterior latex paint?

The drying time to recoat is 4-5 hours.

Cleaning Tips

What should I do about spills?

You should wipe up all spills before they dry.

Prep Tips

What do I do before starting a new painting project?

Before staring a paint project double check color and make sure all paints are stirred before using.

How can I make my painting job easier?

To make your paint job easier, start with the ceiling, then move onto walls, windows and trim. Finish with the door.

I have new plaster, how long do I have to wait to paint?

Before painting on fresh plaster it is best to wait 15 to 30 days.

Sheen Tips

I have multiple finish sheens, any suggestions?

You should sand in between coats for semi gloss or gloss finish paints.

What is the best sheen for imperfections?

If your wall has imperfections a flat or matte finish would be best for hiding.

Paint Tips

Does the quality of paint affect the color?

The best paints have deeper, richer colors that will resist fading better than others. The cheaper ones will leave your house looking tired and in need of a fresh coat in only a couple of years.

I have an old house, is there anything I should know about?

With old buildings or homes you should check for lead before removing or painting any painted areas.
